Last weekend, I was down in Gloucester filming with the Austin Francis Connection to produce a music video for one of their tracks! I first met Edi from the group a couple of years ago at Greenbelt, and have seen them at various events since then, and we’ve often got around to talking about the possibility of working together, and it’s now finally happened!
I drove down really early on Saturday morning, and met the guys on the top of a multi-storey car park… they’d had an idea to shoot some of it on there, but I discovered they hadn’t got any permissions so we quickly looked for a plan B! Since we were going to have to shoot mostly guerrilla-style, we decided to stick to public places where we were unlikely to encounter security guards, and drove around to a park in the city centre and unloaded the jib and camera gear.
We shot quite a bit of stuff around the bandstand, and I was really pleased with how the shots looked. I was shooting on prime lenses – I’d borrowed a 35mm lens adapter from Rob which I was using with his EX1, and it gave it a really nice filmic look. In the afternoon, we filmed in a small wooded area and also a living room set up to look like an art gallery(!) and then in the evening, someone managed to get a local pub to allow us to film one of the shots we needed late on in the evening – so we grabbed food at a local Harvester before heading out to get our bar shot.
That night, we slept on Hobbit’s floor at his flat in Cheltenham (which wasn’t the most comfortable!), and then on the Sunday morning, filmed a bit out on the street near Mark’s house, before moving to a photographic studio the guys had managed to get hold of (at very short notice!!).
It’s a good job they were able to get hold of a space with a white cove because I think that will really help fill out the video, and give it a definite second space opposed to just the location shooting. We got some great overhead shots using the jib right over the top of the three of them, plus individual performances direct to camera. I really can’t wait to see how it all comes together!
